Meet Dr. Terry Andrews (He/Him), a musical maverick hailing from the small town of Swainsboro, GA, where his journey into the world of melodies first began under the tutelage of band directors Dr. Gene Hundley and Barry Golden. Armed with a boundless passion for music, Terry embarked on his formal education at Albany State University, an HBCU in south GA, where he honed his craft under the guidance of Dr. Michael Decuir, earning himself a Bachelor of Music Education.
Fueled by an insatiable thirst for knowledge and melody, Terry continued his academic odyssey at Valdosta State University, immersing himself in the wisdom of Dr. Elizabeth Goode and Dr. Daniel Alexander, securing a Master of Music Performance along the way. Not one to rest on his laurels, he sought further enlightenment at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University, where the illustrious Dr. Andrée Martin sculpted his musical prowess, granting him an Artist Diploma. Terry received his Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music under the mentorship of Professor Michael Gordon, where he's crafting his legacy as a sonic virtuoso. Dr. Andrews has also studied arranging with the incomparable Chen Yi at UMKC.
Beyond the hallowed halls of academia, Terry's musical voyage has been spectacular. As a versatile performer, he has graced the stages of chamber groups, orchestras, wind bands, jazz ensembles, and theatrical pits, leaving audiences awestruck with every note he breathes life into. Notably, he served as a flutist for Orchestra Noir, Atlanta's illustrious African American Orchestra, and has performed with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra.
A laureate of numerous prestigious accolades, including the first-place triumph in the 2022 National Association of Negro Musicians Scholarship Competition and the coveted Grand Prize in the March 2022 International Youth Music Competition Classical Hobbyist, Terry's musical prowess knows no bounds. His virtuosity has graced esteemed platforms such as the National Flute Association (NFA) and Gateways Music Festival. He's been hailed as a Diversity Fellow and semifinalist for the prestigious United States Air Force Premiere Concert Band in Washington, DC.
In the realm of mentorship, Terry pays homage to his mentors by sharing his wisdom with aspiring musicians, performing recitals, conducting masterclasses, and providing a positive figure for the next generation of flutists who look like him to look up to. He had been afforded the opportunity to perform for prominent figures such as Valerie Coleman, Jennifer Gunn, Jim Walker, and Demarre McGill among others, imparting his passion for melody and technique to the next generation of musical luminaries.
As a flute teacher of color, my teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that music education is a powerful tool for empowerment, self-expression, and social change. I am committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive learning environment where students of all backgrounds feel valued, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.
Central to my teaching approach is the recognition of the rich diversity within the world of music. I celebrate the contributions of musicians from all cultures and genres, and I strive to incorporate a wide range of musical traditions into my teaching. By exposing my students to diverse repertoire and styles, I aim to broaden their musical horizons and foster a deep appreciation for the richness of human creativity.
As a teacher of color, I am acutely aware of the importance of representation in music education. I recognize the historical lack of diversity within classical music and the barriers that many students of color face in pursuing their musical aspirations. That's why I am committed to serving as a role model and mentor for aspiring musicians from underrepresented backgrounds. I strive to ignite my students' passion for learning by creating meaningful connections between course content and their own lives, interests, and aspirations. I encourage creativity, experimentation, and risk-taking, recognizing that failure is an essential part of the learning process. I seek to create a supportive and inclusive space where students can see themselves reflected in the music they play and feel empowered to pursue their dreams, regardless of societal expectations or stereotypes.
In my teaching, I prioritize cultural sensitivity and awareness. I strive to create a curriculum that is inclusive and respectful of all cultural backgrounds, incorporating music from diverse traditions and highlighting the contributions of musicians from marginalized communities. By centering the voices and experiences of people of color in my teaching, I aim to challenge stereotypes, promote empathy, and foster a greater understanding of the interconnectedness of humanity through music.
I believe in the power of music to transcend language and cultural barriers, fostering connections and building bridges between people from different backgrounds. Through my teaching, I aim to cultivate a sense of community and belonging among my students, encouraging collaboration, empathy, and mutual respect. I believe that by learning to listen to and appreciate each other's unique perspectives, we can create a more harmonious and inclusive society.
In addition to musical skill development, I am committed to nurturing the holistic growth of my students. I believe in the importance of fostering confidence, resilience, and self-expression, empowering my students to find their voice both musically and personally. I encourage creativity, curiosity, and a spirit of exploration, providing a supportive space for students to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from their experiences.
I am committed to empowering my students to become independent thinkers and problem-solvers. I encourage them to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and explore different perspectives. I provide guidance and support as they navigate complex topics and develop critical thinking skills that will serve them well beyond the classroom.
Ultimately, my goal as a flute teacher of color is to inspire a new generation of musicians who are not only skilled performers but also compassionate, culturally aware citizens of the world. Through music education that is inclusive, empowering, and culturally responsive, I hope to contribute to a more equitable and harmonious society, where all voices are heard and valued. By fostering connections, promoting active learning, empowering students, nurturing curiosity, and fostering collaboration, I strive to create a learning environment where every student can thrive.
Embracing new experiences is the first step toward growth! It's completely normal to feel a bit uncertain when starting something new, especially if it's your first time diving into private lessons. I understand that many students are embarking on this journey for the first time, and that's why I'm here to guide you every step of the way.
For younger students, a parent or carer needs to be in the lesson so they know how to give support and guidance at home. When the child is ready to be more independent, attendance can be cut back progressively. I will continue to email lesson notes to assist with home practice.
Taking care of your flute is a breeze! All it needs is some TLC to keep it clean and secure. I recommend holding off on playing it until our first lesson, where we can walk through exactly how to do this together. It'll be a fun and informative session!
Absolutely! I've got some students who do all their learning online. And you know what? It works great! Sometimes, if a student is feeling a bit under the weather, needs to stay home, or just can't make it to a lesson, we switch gears and meet online. It's super convenient! When a student joins my studio, I make sure they're all set up to hop into our online sessions whenever they need to. Flexibility is key, and I'm here to make learning as easy and accessible as possible!
I offer the following rates for lessons:
Payment is required at the commencement of each lesson. Additionally, I am open to arranging payment plans on a monthly or semester basis to accommodate your needs. Payment can be made via cash, check, or Venmo. Thank you for your cooperation.
